UUFD Winter Farmers’ Market with Local Artisans Saturday

winterfarmersmktGet out of the cold and join the warmth and coziness of the UU Winter Market at the Unitarian Universalists Fellowship of DeKalb at 158 North Fourth Street on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at 9 am-3 pm. Shop locally raised and organic food, baked goods, honey, and more. Find a beautiful and unique artisan made object of adornment, something useful, or a gift just in time for Valentine’s Day. Listen to sweet music while enjoying home made soup, bread and coffee. See what’s new in the rare and used book sale. Visit with friends at this fun event.

Admission is $1. “There will be over 40 vendors. Many of the vendors are with the market for the first time.” Said Dan Kenney, organizer of the annual market.

Fresh grass fed beef, pork, and poultry, as well as farm fresh eggs, pork, sausage, locally sourced cheese, grains, and more, all organically and humanely raised from Hassellman Farms.

There will also be locally raised honey.

Jeff Wielert of Bountiful Blessings will be at the market with evergreen boughs, and wreaths; as well as salsas, jams, and other value added items from their farm near Hinckley.

Katie from Beets and Beats Farm of Sycamore will also be at the market this year.

winterfarmersmarketIn addition to the farmers the market will offer over 30 artists and craft-persons from the DeKalb County area. There will be a very large variety of craft and art work items. There will also be baked goods, homemade breads, and many other delicious items to choose from. Baked goods will be provided by Monika’s Organic Bakery of Sycamore. Also great French pastries provided by the Sisters of Notre Dame.

“We have vendors offering a great variety of items for sale, from metal jewelry to crocheted items, hooked rugs, goat soap, hats, original paintings, weaving supplies, and much, much more. I can’t begin to list all of the items available. It will be a great, fun market to attend.” Kenney said.

In addition to all of the vendors and activity there will also be live music all day on the stage. Again a variety of local musicians will be sharing their talent from piano to steel guitar, and more.

Also Sunnflower Catering of DeKalb will be providing hot food. There will also be a commons area set up for people to gather, have coffee, tea, soup, or hot chocolate and talk.

“We are often complimented on the fun community atmosphere and what an enjoyable market it is. We hope people stop by and join in the fun.” Kenney said. “It is a great way to experience a warm and fun community event while also supporting local artists and growers. It is important to shop local, when you buy directly from a local farmer or artist the money you spend multiplies throughout the community instead of leaving the county. It supports and helps build a strong local DeKalb County economy.”

Studies show that when you spend money with a locally owned and operated business, 60% of the money stays and is circulated in the community; and when you spend money at a chain store, only 40% or less stays in the area.
