The EMT-B program consists of the seven-credit hour class, EMS 107 – Basic Emergency Med Tech. The class meets in the evenings for six hours of lecture-discussion and three hours of lab each week, January 17 through May 19. The course also includes 20 hours of Emergency Department Clinical Experience and four hours of Respiratory Clinical Experience. Students interested in being admitted to the EMT-B program must place into college-level English and show proof of mumps, measles and Rubella immunity. A current 2-Step T.B. test is required as well as finger printing and Criminal Background Check, flu shots, and drug testing.
The EMS program at Kishwaukee College has graduated 240 Paramedics and EMTs over the past five years alone. Deb Baert, Coordinator of the EMS Programs, explained the difference between EMT and Paramedics.
“An EMT gives a basic level of care. They focus on skills that are essential, such as airway management, CPR and certain medications that need immediate administration for life saving purposes,” she said. “A Paramedic gives advanced life support, working under a medical director, they can do things that only doctors can do in the normal clinical settings. This brings the advanced level of care to the street, sometimes that means the difference of life or death.” Students interested in becoming Paramedics must first become EMT-Bs.
