UUFD Winter Farmers’ Market With Crafts

Plan to stop in to the UUFD Winter Farmers’ Market With Crafts this Saturday, January 28th, between 9am and 3pm for a little bit of summertime fun. The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb will be holding their 3rd annual Winter Farmers Market inside their church.

You’ll find grass fed beef, free range eggs and chickens, home-spun wool, goat soap, fresh vegetables & herbs, as well as over 20 arts & craft vendors at the Winter Farmers Market. Admission is $1. Groundhog Gala Saturday

Saturday evening, January 28th, is the Midwest Museum of Natural History’s biggest event of the year. Their winter fundraiser is unlike any other, featuring displays and demonstrations by natural history experts, live music, dancers, refreshments, and an open bar. The silent auction will feature items from over 70 different donors. This year’s exhibitors feature paleontologist Scott Williams from Burpee Museum, primatologist Leila Porter from Northern Illinois University, tarantula experts, a coffee specialist, and more.

The Groundhog Gala event runs from 6pm to 9pm and will be held at The Midwest Museum of Natural History, 425 West State Street in Sycamore.  Tickets are $30 for one or $50 for two (ages 21+). Castle Challenge Friday

This Friday, January 27th, will tip-off the Annual Castle Challenge, which coincides with the DeKalb vs. Sycamore High School basketball game at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center. The girls’ varsity game will begin at 6:00 pm with the boys’ varsity following at 8:00 pm. There will be musical entertainment, games for kids, and special appearances by Miss Illinois, Miss Wisconsin, and Miss Iowa.

The Challenge was created to increase attendance at athletic events, raise funds, and enhance awareness of the Sycamore Sports Booster and the DeKalb Barb Booster organizations.  Local businesses, organizations, and individuals are “Challenged” to help raise funds that will help support school athletic programs with net proceeds being distributed to the school’s booster clubs. Read More...

Free Tax Prep for Local Residents

With the annual tax season upon us, local partners are coming together to host free tax preparation sites that will allow low-to-moderate income residents to get tax credits they deserve, and put more money into their pockets.

In the Spring of 2011, Judy Brooks of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in Chicago approached Kishwaukee United Way and other community organizations about coming together to assist families in DeKalb County. The IRS’s goal was to increase the number of people eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) in DeKalb County. Each year, hundreds of residents miss out on funds that are due to them as a part of their tax return. As a result of the IRS outreach, the DeKalb County CA$H Coalition was formed. The acronym, CA$H stand for “Creating Assets, Savings and Hope”. The group’s mission is to provide educational tools and community resources for family asset development through the claiming of tax credits, quality volunteer tax return preparation, and other asset building options.
