Union Pacific Celebrates 150 Years

Just as some are frustrated about the Union Pacific Railroad closing of one of DeKalb’s major intersections for improvements, it might help to hear the following from State Representative Bob Pritchard:

The House extended congratulations to the Union Pacific Railroad last week on their 150th anniversary. The original Union Pacific was formed when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Pacific Railway Act into law on July 1, 1862.

Union Pacific is the largest railroad in the rail capital of Chicago. They serve 115,000 commuters on a daily basis on the Union Pacific Metra North, Northwest, and West Lines, and operate more trains for Metra than any other carrier in the Chicagoland area.

UP operates Global III Railport in Rochelle and transports millions of tons of freight across the country including 1.3 million containers each year. The company has invested $470 million in capital improvements over the past two years and at last report employed over 4,000 employees in Illinois with a payroll of over $327 million.

Another Beth Fowler Dancer Crowned

Keeley Sawyer was crowned on March 11th as Miss Chicago Outstanding Teen 2012 which now qualifies her to compete in the Miss Illinois Outstanding Teen Pageant. The event was made even more special when Keely’s win was announced by Hannah Smith, the current reigning Miss Illinois who also dances with the Beth Fowler Dance Company in Genoa and St. Charles.

Prior to this year, Keeley did not have experience with pageant competition, but has been dancing with Beth Fowler for the past 13 years, since she was three years old. Neither Hannah nor Keeley had pagaent experience or competition experience but soon found that with their dance training they could do well.

The Beth Fowler Dance Company has been asked to perform as part of the entertainment at this year’s Miss Illinois Pageant to be held this June in Marion, Illinois. Hannah will be crowning the new Miss Illinois while Keeley will be competing for the title of Miss Illinois Outstanding Teen 2012 on June 30th 2012. Let Your Voice Be Heard

On April 10th residents who reside in DeKalb township will have a historic opportunity to participate in one of the only remaining forms of pure democracy that still exists and it only happens once a year. If you are a registered voter in the city of DeKalb, you will have the opportunity to vote to place three very important advisory referenda questions on the November general election ballot.

  1. “Shall the City of DeKalb continue to operate as a City Manager form of government?”
  2. “Shall the City of DeKalb continue to be a Home Rule city?”
  3. “Should the DeKalb Public Library become a library district instead of a municipal library?”

All three of these issues have been intensely discussed by the citizen’s of DeKalb and DeKalb Township for quite some time, but local leaders, including DeKalb Mayor Kris Povlsen have chosen to ignore the discussion. The irony is that Mayor Povlsen constantly insists that he wants to hear from the public on important issues affecting the city, but when citizens come forward at city council meetings and express an opinion that he disagrees with, Mayor Povlsen will often ignore or lecture the speaker. Too an extreme, a few weeks ago, he had representatives from the NIU center for Black Studies escorted out of the city council chambers by police.  A travesty! (more…)

Stonehouse Question to go back to Planning and Zoning Committee

Another public hearing was held Thursday, March 29th in the Legislative Center of DeKalb County concerning an amendment to the Special Use Permit held by Stonehouse Park in rural Southern DeKalb County. About 40 people, mostly neighbors, attended the public hearing, requiring extra seating to be brought in.

After the first public hearing on this issue February 9th, it was sent to the Planning and Zoning Committee with a recommendation from hearing officer Ron Klein to accept the amended Special Use Permit with conditions, including a capacity limit of 500 people. The Committee sent it back for another public hearing for more information when the owners of the park stated they could not operate their business plan with a capacity that low.

Owners of Stonehouse Park, Gregg Larson and Steve Cecchin opened the public hearing with a presentation comparing the park to the Sandwich Fairgrounds. Hearing officer Klein rejected the comparison stating that the Fairground is much bigger and better organized, doesn’t hold music festivals and also does not allow alcohol on the premises.

Kim Kardashian’s Flour Bomber is from DeKalb

Christina Cho, the activist who poured cooking flour on Kim Kardashian’s jacket and hair during her perfume launch last week is an Korean-American born activist from right here in DeKalb, Illinois. Christina is a strict vegan and has been involved with PETA for many years.

This is not Christina’s first activist act, a few years ago she attacked Designer Donna Karan. In 2010 at the Women’s Conference in California and while designer Donna Karan was talking about her collection, Christina got on stage, grabbed a mic and said Karan’s collection was made with real rabbit fur from China, also at the convention were Michelle Obama, Dr. Jill Biden, Maria Shriver and Oprah Winfrey.

Christina Cho is well known for her bikini protest alongside Bandi Villadolid, where both women got inside a cage and had signs that said “KFC tortured Chicks” in 2005.  On January, 2012 she and another activist went topless, in front of a Farmer John sausage processing plant to protest the consumption of meat and what they claim to be the inhumane treatment of animals.

Christina Cho’s parents emigrated from Korea and settled in DeKalb, Illinois where their two daughters were born. Christina has been involved in PETA for years and it was allegedly because of her, that her little sister got involved as well. Christina Cho is the older sister of PETA Special Projects Manager Michelle Cho.

Home Rule Question on the November Ballot?

Nary a Woodward or a Bernstein would dare to make my newest prediction:

The 2012 Annual Meeting of the Electors of DeKalb Township will set a 20-year (at least) record for attendance.

That’s because at the April 10, 2012 meeting the following questions to be placed on the general election ballot to be held November 6, 2012 are on the agenda as action items.

  1. “Shall the City of DeKalb continue to operate as a City Manager form of government?”
  2. “Shall the City of DeKalb continue to be a Home Rule city?”
  3. “Should the DeKalb Public Library become a library district instead of a municipal library?”

If approved by the DeKalb Township Electors one or all three of the above questions will be on the November ballot as advisory referendums. (more…)
