KC piloting new online GED preparation program

Kim Green - Kishwaukee College Adult Education

The Adult Education and Transition Programs (AETP) Division at Kishwaukee College is offering a new, free format for community residents to prepare for their GED: i-Pathways.

Tricia Wagner, Director of Adult Education at Kishwaukee, stated, “One of the biggest barriers facing community residents who want to receive a GED is transportation. More students also tell us they are interested in using technology. The i-Pathways program is an online program that allows students to use and develop their digital skills and offers the convenience of preparing for the GED tests from a personal computer. We are connecting with libraries throughout our district along with the Illinois workNet Center and Partners for Employment to explore ways to help students access i-Pathways.”

Kim Green, the instructor for the new i-Pathways program, explained, “This program is perfect for students who are in our district but live in the more rural areas or in communities in which we do not offer a class site. Because the i-Pathways program is online, students who are attending classes can also use it to review materials and gives them extra resources to use as they prepare for their GED tests. It’s a win-win program for members of our community who want to complete a GED.”

To help keep you smarter, Hearing Help Express has got a challenge for you: Keep your ears (and your brain) working with new advanced hearing aids. And to make it easier, you can get Starkey Open-Ear hearing aids at an unbelievably low price PLUS they’ll even give you an extra 10% off your already low purchase price for the next 60 days.

The DeKalb County KEYS Initiative Has New Home

The DeKalb County KEYS Initiative is pleased to announce that they have joined forces with the Prevention and Education program of the Ben Gordon Center. KEYS asset specialist, Mary Hess joined the prevention and education team on February 21, 2012.

According to Kathy Hicks, BGC prevention and education program manager, “it really made sense to both parties to merge these two programs together. Asset development is a natural fit in prevention programming. Evidence indicates that the 40 developmental assets have a powerful, positive impact on young people. Children and teenagers who have a lot of assets get involved in very few risky behaviors–the kinds of problems we worry about. And when young people have a lot of assets, they are much more likely to do the positive things we value. By merging, the two organizations will combine their resources and broaden their reach to promote community based prevention, wellness and healthy lifestyles for youth, adults and the community as a whole.”
