The Home Stretch

Entering its last legs of its race the 2012 Illinois Primary Election is anything but predictable. Sure, on the Democratic ballot there’s more local offices with no candidates than there are contested races but who knows who will emerge from their caucus for the November general election. Local Republicans are slugging it out (Smith vs Campbell) much like at the state and federal levels (Johnson vs Syverson), (Kinsinger vs Manzullo), (Romney, Santorum, Gingrich, Paul). There are few sure predictions including what impact a relevant presidential contest in an Illinois primary will have on historically anemic voter turnout. (more…)

Candidate Forum at City Hall Tonight

The DeKalb City Council Chambers (200 South 4th; DeKalb) is the site of a televised candidates’ forum Thursday evening beginning at 6:30pm with a meet and greet session with the candidates. The event marks the official return of sorts for the League of Women Voters of DeKalb County to hosting local candidate forums. A well ran candidate forum was put together as a precursor by an unaffiliated chapter during the 2010 elections.

The question and answer session of the forum will be broadcast live on cable access Channel 14. Daily Chronicle Managing Editor Kate Schott is the moderator for the debate. Those who attend may submit questions of the candidates for consideration. League of Women Voters of DeKalb County chapter President Kay Shelton advised via press release that questions short enough to fit on a 3×5 card have a better chance of being chosen. (more…)

Local Candidate Forum at the Egyptian Theatre

A change in format is something new for the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce Candidate Night (tonight) at the Egyptian Theatre. In past events audience members would suggest questions for the candidates who would answer in a debate style. Because of the many variables involved in a primary election including a high number of uncontested races that system is difficult to implement. The new format includes a meet and greet session for one-on-one conversations and allows each candidate 6 minutes under the spotlight to discuss the issues and reasons they are seeking office.
