If you’re like a lot of families, you probably love the summer and fall when your favorite fruits of the farm are in season. You can take the family to pick delicious berries, choose the perfect pumpkin, ride a pony, feed a goat, or just fill up on warm apple cider donuts.
If you have a picturesque farm, and enjoy telling people your story, you may even be considering your own agritourism enterprise. “You may be thinking that with a few strategic improvements and investments, you’ll be in business!” says Andy Larson, Local Food Systems and Small Farms Educator with University of Illinois Extension. “But if you build it, will they come???”
Join Andy Larson, Extension Educator, and Jenna Spychal, agritainment farmer at Jonamac Orchard, for a seminar about starting up your own agritourism operation. They’ll be discussing:
Location, location, location
Types of agritourism enterprises and attractions
Public expectations and amenities
Safety and liability
Marketing and promotion
Growth and financial management
“Starting an agritourism enterprise on your farm is not a decision to be taken lightly, so make sure you have thought through everything before you take the plunge,” adds Larson.
The workshop will be held this Tuesday, July 19th from 5:30-8:00pm at the University of Illinois Extension office in Sycamore, which is located in the DeKalb County Farm Bureau building at 1350 W. Prairie Drive, near the corner of Peace Rd and Bethany Rd. The program fee for this workshop is $10 per person. To register or for questions or additional information, please call 815-758-8194.
