Glidden Campus Florist Remembers
Glidden Campus Florist announced today that a percentage of all proceeds taken on Sunday, February 14, 2010 (Valentine’s Day) will be donated in remembrance of the tragic events that occurred in 2008 at Cole Hall Auditorium.
Monies will be donated to the Office of Support and Advocacy at Northern Illinois University. This office has been created at NIU to provide central resources and one referral point for those students, families, faculty and staff most directly impacted by the tragedy.
“As a member of the campus community”, Angella Parisot, Office Manager, said about the decision to donate a portion of the proceeds on the second anniversary of that tragic day, “We at Glidden Florist wanted to acknowledge the loss we as a community felt and show our support to one of the organizations which promotes the continued healing and growth of those most affected.”
The Office of Support and Advocacy’s mission is to empower students, faculty and staff who were present in Cole Hall Auditorium on February 14, 2008 at the time of the campus tragedy, as well as loved ones of the students lost, to take free advantage of the resources available to support them as they manage their present situation and create their future.
Grace Weidner, a survivor of the Cole Hall shooting, has worked for Glidden Campus Florist since August of 2008 and has become part of the “Glidden Florist Family”. Grace is a member of the Programming Board for the Office of Support and Advocacy and when advised about the Glidden Florist donation said, “It is very touching that a business of the community, which was also affected by the shooting, wanted to help our organization”.
Glidden Campus Florist is located directly in the heart of Northern Illinois University and services all of Northern Illinois Campus. Valentine’s Day is one of the busiest days of the year for Glidden Campus Florist. Ten percent of all proceeds from that day will be donated in a private presentation.
There are several memorial events planned around this anniversary, for further details please reference the Northern Illinois University website.

Small Business and Entrepreneur Assistance DeKalb County is a community that is well aware of the advantages small business owners and entrepreneurs bring to the area. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration website, independent firms having less than 500 employees represent 99.7 percent of all employer firms. They employ approximately half of all private sector employees and have generated 60 to 80 percent of all new jobs annually during the past 10 years. It is with this in mind that DeKalb County has a number of resources available to these individuals and groups.
The DeKalb County organizations that are available to small business owners and entrepreneurs include:
Elgin Community College Small Business Development Center
Kishwaukee College Center for Business Development and Continuing Education
Waubonsee Community College Small Business Development Center
DeKalb County Chapter of the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE)
Illinois Manufacturing Extension Center (IMEC)
They provide assistance with business planning, marketing, employee training, process improvements, technology and financing. For more information on all of these resources Click Here.
Home Run Inn Wines now available Home Run Inn was started in 1923 as a small tavern on the south-side of Chicago by the Grittani family. When Nick Perrino married Loretta Grittani, he brought his love of food into their lives. In 1947, he and Loretta along with her mother, Mary, added pizza to the tavern's small menu. Soon enough, a Chicago pizza dynasty was born. Home Run Inn pizzerias are now found throughout Chicago-land and their frozen pizza distribution continues to expand across the nation.
Today, Home Run Inn is the leading frozen pizza brand in the Chicago area. That's no small feat either. Although local food brands often have strong followings, they rarely beat national brands in major categories such as frozen pizza.
In 2007, Roger Janakus, owner of Stanger Vineyards and long time customer, met with Joe Perrino and the Home Run Inn Family to discuss making a line of unique wines for their pizzerias. Roger had grown up in the neighborhood of the original Home Run Inn and still remembers having Home Run Inn Pizza as a special treat.
After tasting Roger's fabulous wines, the family was quite pleased and ventured out to California. Today they are proud to offer Home Run Inn's house wines, blended by Stanger Vineyards and made from the best quality, family approved grapes.
Roger Janakus also owns Door and Window Super Store here in Sycamore as well as Downer's Grove and Orland Park. It was the success of the Door & Window business that allowed Roger to realize his California winery dream.
Home Run Inn wines, "California Cabernet Sauvignon" and "California Chardonnay" are now available at your local Jewel/Osco store. This weekend you can buy the $9.99 wines for $8.99 (with the $1.00 off coupon) and 26 of the 180 stores in Chicagoland are promoting it with samples of both the pizza and wine.
Pick up a frozen Home Run Inn pizza and a bottle of their wine to enjoy while watching the Super Bowl. Roger recommends the Cabernet with meat pizzas or pasta and Chardonnay with veggie pizzas or salads.
