Formed in the cold Chicago winter of 1977, Survivor’s “Eye of The Tiger,” a song requested by Sylvester Stallone to be written expressly for Rocky III in 1982, shot the band to national attention. “Eye of The Tiger” spent seven weeks at #1on the Billboard charts in the U.S. and won a Grammy, received an Oscar nomination and was voted “Best New Song” by the People’s Choice Awards. Survivor’s 1984 album Vital Signs kept the band on the charts for over 40 weeks in 1984 and 1985, achieving multi-platinum status with a string of hit singles.   The album included Billboard Top 20 hits”I Can’t Hold Back,” ”High on You” and ”The Search is Over,” which reached #2 on the Hot 100.

For the first time in Survivor’s history, four original band members will hit the stage.  Chicago native Frankie Sullivan couldn’t “Hold Back” and has reunited former members of the band, including himself, both lead vocalists Dave Bickler and Jimi Jamison and drummer Mark Droubay.  Survivor’s concert at the Egyptian is the only chance in Illinois (out of Survivor’s announced US and European tour dates) to see these legends perform together!

Englishman John Waite has risen to rock fame as the lead singer and bassist of The Babys, as part of the super group Bad English and as a solo artist. The British group The Babys had two pop hits that each peaked at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100, 1977′s “Isn’t It Time” and 1979′s “Every Time I Think Of You.”

Waite’s 1984 solo album No Brakes resulted in international attention – and was a Top 10 Billboard album in the U.S. due to the smash hit single “Missing You,” which went to #1 on the Billboard singles chart. Click here to purchase your tickets!

The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra at the Egyptian Saturday

GlennMillerOrchTFThe big band sound from the 1940s returns to the Egyptian Theatre as the world famous Glenn Miller Orchestra takes to the stage this Saturday, May 4 at 2 pm.

The first Glenn Miller Orchestra was formed in 1937 and failed financially. Glenn Miller launched his second band in March of1938 and it became a sensation, with multiple hits and huge box office sales. In 1941, the Glenn Miller Orchestra had more hit records in one year, including A String of Pearls, than anybody in the history of the recording industry at that time. In addition, Glenn Miller’s Chattanooga Choo Choo received the first Gold Record ever to be awarded, with over 1 million copies sold.

In 1942 during World War II, Miller volunteered for the Army and disbanded his musical organization. On December 15, 1944, now Major Miller took off in a single engine plane from England – against his better judgment – to precede his band to France and was never seen again. The army officially declared him dead one year later.

Based on popular demand, the Miller Estate authorized the formation of the present Glenn Miller Orchestra in 1956. Nick Hilscher is the current music director and male vocalist for the orchestra; Eileen Burns is the featured female vocalist. The Glenn Miller Orchestra is a fully self-contained group consisting of the music director, two vocalists, five saxophone players, four trumpeters, four trombonists, and three rhythm musicians (piano, bass and drums). As the vocalists, Hilscher and Burns perform individually and as part of The Moonlight SerenadersÒ vocal group.

Today the Glenn Miller Orchestra travels over 100,000 miles each year, playing nearly 300 dates and entertaining more than 500,000 people annually. The orchestra has performed in all 50 United States, as well as throughout Europe, Australia, Iceland, New Zealand, Guam, the Philippines, South and Central America. The orchestra has also toured Japan annually for 45 years. Read more →

Free Giveaway to Celebrate 1913 Women’s Voting Victory in Illinois

switchback-may18The year 1913 was a lucky one. In 1913, the birth of the Lincoln Highway shares a 100th anniversary with the government in Illinois granting the right to vote for women in Illinois, for certain offices. The Illinois House voted to allow women the right to vote for the national election on June 12 of 1913 and Governor Dunne signed the bill two weeks later. Women could then vote in the national election for president and vice president, for or against referendums in local elections, and to choose county surveyors. Women in Illinois, however, could not yet vote for governor or other state-wide and local offices. Full voting rights for all women throughout the United States did not come until 1920. But, 1913 was a major victory for women in Illinois. Many early voting rights activists participated in Women’s Suffrage Automobile Tours throughout Illinois, traveling from town to town, organized by Grace Wilbur Trout of Oak Park, Illinois based on an idea by another key voting rights activist, Catherine Waugh McCulloch.

To remember and celebrate the 1913 voting victory in Illinois and the establishment of the Lincoln Highway, there will be 13 concert tickets given away for the May 18th Switchback and MahaRah concert and Lincoln Highway Birthday Party to the first 13 lucky people who come to the DeKalb Area Women’s Center at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 26th. The DeKalb Area Women’s Center is the large white building at 1021 State Street in DeKalb. There is parking available one half block south on North 11th Street and a wheelchair accessible lift can be used from the alley entrance to the building.

For more information about the May 18th 7:30 p.m. concert and Lincoln Highway Birthday Bash, please see the Egyptian Theatre’s Website or illinoislincolnhighwayassociation.org.

Egyptian Theatre Featured in PreservationNation Blog

The following article about DeKalb’s own Egyptian Theatre was posted this week in the National PreservationNation blog:

egyptiantheatre1978For decades, when the people of DeKalb, Ill., have spent an evening out at the movies, or attended a concert or other event, they’ve done so under the watchful eye of Ramses II.

The Egyptian pharaoh, who reigned from 1279 to 1213 BC, served as inspiration to architect Elmer F. Behrns when he designed the northern Illinois community’s downtown landmark, the historic Egyptian Theatre, in 1929. Behrns channeled the ancient ruler as he envisioned a temple-like entrance flanked by two pharaoh sculptures, an elaborate sacred scarab beetle-centered stained glass window, and a colorful tiled lobby floor.

At the time, Egyptian architecture was a nationwide craze set off by the discovery of King Tut’s tomb in 1922. Today, DeKalb’s Egyptian is one of few left standing. But standing it is, and even 84 years after it was built, the regal structure is still drawing loyal crowds.

Beth Fowler Dance Company presents ‘A Storybook Ballet’

storybook-balletThe Beth Fowler Dance Company of Genoa and St Charles is in last minute rehearsal for a new original dance production “A Storybook Ballet.” The ballet created by Beth Fowler was inspired by the stories of Snow White, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. It will premiere at DeKalb’s Egyptian Theatre at 7:00pm this Friday March 15th with additional performances Saturday March 16th at 2:00 and 7:00pm and Sunday March 17th at 2:00pm.

As the curtain opens, young Marie is getting ready for bed. When her mother reads Marie a bedtime story, the magic begins. As Marie falls asleep, for Tinker Bell Fairies fly into the room and spin her bed as she falls into a magical dream where the storybook grows to 10 feet high. Snow White and her friends step out of the book into Marie’s world. The bedroom is transformed into Snow White’s forest where she meets her forest friends the Seven Dwarfs and is frightened by the Jealous Queen and tormenting bats. Snow White is saved when she finally meets her Prince.

Delighted by the happy ending Marie turns the page of the giant storybook to be greeted by Ariel, The Little Mermaid and her sister mermaids. Marie’s bedroom turns into a beautiful undersea scene with a variety of fish, clams and coral. Ariel is saved by Prince Eric from the Sea Witch Ursula’s evil spell.
After a short intermission, the story continues as Marie turns pages twice more to bring out the characters of Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast to tell their stories, Finally Marie’s bedroom transforms back as she awakens and wonders if it was all just a dream.
