Free Tax Preparation for Local Residents

cash-coalitionWith the annual tax season upon us, local partners are coming together again to host free tax preparation sites that will allow low-to-moderate income residents to get the tax credits they deserve, and put more money into their pockets.

In 2011, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)-Chicago, Kishwaukee United Way and other community organizations first came together to assist families in DeKalb County. The local group’s, the DeKalb County CA$H Coalition, goal is to increase the number of people eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) in DeKalb County. Each year, hundreds of residents miss out on funds that are due to them as a part of their tax return. The acronym CA$H stands for “Creating Assets, Savings and Hope”. The group’s mission is to help create financial stability for local families by providing educational tools and resources for family asset development through access to tax credits, quality volunteer tax return preparation, and other asset building programs. Members of this coalition include Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois, Kishwaukee United Way, the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), Northern Illinois University’s College of Business, and DeKalb County Community Services.

For their part, Goodwill Industries and AARP will host local VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) sites throughout DeKalb County. Goodwill’s site will be at the DeKalb store location at 1037 South Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb and will host volunteers from the Accountancy Program at NIU’s College of Business on Tuesdays from 3 to 8 pm and Saturdays 9 am to 3 pm January 26 through April 13, 2013. This year Goodwill has opened an additional site on Northern Illinois University’s campus—in the Student Lounge of Founders Memorial Library. This site is open Wednesdays 4 to 8 pm. The VITA Volunteer Tax Preparers will be IRS-certified to assist community members in claiming any special credits and deductions for which they may be eligible. This program is open to families with incomes less than $50,000 per year and individuals with incomes less than $25,000 for 2012.

Kishwaukee United Way’ Annual Day of Caring

Kishwaukee United Way’ Annual Day of Caring is this Thursday, June 21st. Day of Caring is an organized day of service during which volunteers from the Board of Directors of Kishwaukee United Way, and staff from Kishwaukee United Way partner agencies visit, assist, and complete projects at one of the community’s non-profit agencies. Each agency submits requests for volunteer help on a broad variety of projects ranging from reading to children, delivering meals to the elderly, repairing and painting houses, planting gardens, and refurbishing agency offices.

Day of Caring formally kicks off the community campaign efforts, providing an opportunity to help others through hands-on experience and see where United Way donations go and how agency programs are affecting people’s lives. With numerous projects requiring a good number of volunteers, they need you and your organization’s participation to make this year successful!

Cuts For A Cause

University City Barbershop (817 W. Lincoln Highway, DeKalb) is hosting a fundraising event to benefit Kishwaukee United Way on Saturday, September 3, 2011, from 11 am to 3 pm. A portion of the day’s proceeds will be generously donated to Kishwaukee United Way.

Christopher Hickman, owner of University City Barbershop, approached Kishwaukee United Way expressing the desire to put together an event that would be good for both organizations. The end result is the Cuts for a Cause event. Christopher and his staff will be on hand to provide the professional and affordable masculine hair cuts they have been providing for several years.

Jackie DiNatale, Coordinator of Outreach for Kishwaukee United Way, said “We were thrilled that Chris called and wanted to help Kishwaukee United Way. We are a community-based organization so we love when the community asks to partner with us. We are really excited about this event and hope that lots of boys and guys needing a hair cut come out on September 3rd!” For more information about Kishwaukee United Way, ‘friend’ us on Facebook.

United Way Community Investment a Success

Volunteers distribute funds to area agency programs

If you asked 2,000 people how to spend money, you’d probably get 2,000 different answers.  Opinions become even more divided when people’s lives are affected by how you spend the dollars.

That’s why Kishwaukee United Way asks its team of Board volunteers to analyze the best way to invest funds raised in last year’s annual campaign.  The allocation panel is comprised of community volunteers from varied backgrounds. The members spent over 24 total hours in a 5 week period between agency site visits, reviews and discussions involved in the process.  Volunteers weighed the impact made by each of the agency programs against the requests made by partner organizations, the pool of available funds, and overall community needs.

The end result: $290,000 will go to 23 organizations and programs having a direct impact on the lives of thousands of DeKalb County residents – 95 cents of every dollar donated to United Way is reinvested in local programs and services.

Dawn Littlefield, Executive Director of the Kishwaukee United Way said, “Every agency is evaluated on an individual basis by Board volunteers and there are in-depth discussions on each program’s impact in our service area.”

Extensive research, fiscal review, lively debate and much consideration was given before funding recommendations became final.  The Board of Directors voted approval of the allocations at its May Board of Directors meeting.

The process began in March,” noted Renee Ellingson, Kishwaukee United Way President.  “Area non-profit partner agencies received grant applications and submitted information about their program needs and financial data.  Board members studied the material, personally visited funded agencies and shared information between the two allocation teams.”

One of the most time intensive aspects of the allocation process are the agency panel presentations where organizations present information about their programs, and answer questions about their requests.

As a part of the process, we asked questions about the effectiveness of each program.” Kayte Hamel, incoming Campaign Chair said, of the questions asked to partner agencies during presentations.  “We looked at where dollars were to be spent in each program, how the program is currently being evaluated and how many people are being served.”

The responsibility of allocation volunteers is to make the funding decisions in a way that ensured donor dollars are being used effectively to make the greatest impact.

With requests coming in over $24,000 higher than the available funding of $290,000 the inevitable shortfall meant both a literal and proverbial give-and-take, requiring team members to be as objective as possible.

I am satisfied with the results,” Ellingson said.  “The input from Board members made sense, and there was good discussion and overall compromises. There is a vast amount of need in our community that may not visible to the average person.  This process ensures help and support for the neighbors and families in our community who are in need of services. We are grateful to the community for their support of Kishwaukee United Way. Without our donors and volunteers we would not be able to assist the local agencies that in turn help the members of our community.”
