Memorial Day Around the County

memorialday11Genoa Veterans Memorial Day

The Genoa Veterans will be hosting a Memorial Day Parade starting at 11:30 A.M. on Monday, May 27th, 2013. A Cemetery memorial service will be held at 12:00 P.M..  Burgers, hot dogs, brats, chips and pop will be served under tent at the Vets Home, 311 S Washington St in Genoa at 12:30 P.M.. Kingston American Legion Post 1010 Memorial Service

The Kingston American Legion Post 1010 will host their Memorial Day Service beginning at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, May 27th, 2013 at Kingston Park.
A social hour will be held in the shelter with refreshments and free pork chop sandwiches. Everyone is welcome to attend. Kingston Park is located at 5 Points Rd. and Rt. 72 in Kingston , IL..

Malta Memorial Day Service

A Memorial Day Parade and Service will be held in Malt at the Methodist Church, South Third Street and Sprague Street in Malta, IL, 60150.

Sycamore Memorial Day

The 2013 Mayor’s Memorial Day Breakfast will be on Monday, May 27, 2013 from 6:45am to 7:30am at Jane Fargo Hotel, 355 W. State Street, Sycamore, Illinois 60178. Following the Breakfast at 7:55am, the Keynote Military VIP Motorcycle/Motorcade Escort starts at the Jane Fargo Hotel in Sycamore and goes to Joiner Cemetery. At 8:15am, the Joiner Cemetery Memorial Service will be held. The Joiner Cemetery is located west of Sycamore on West Old State Road just east of Five Points Road.  At 10:00am on Monday, the Sycamore Memorial Day Parade and Service at the Sycamore Veteran’s Home, 121 S California St Sycamore, IL 60178, phone: (815) 895-2931.

Maple Park Memorial Day

Each year during the Memorial Day weekend, American Legion members from Post 312 in Maple Park place American flags on the graves of service members at six Maple Park cemeteries. On Memorial Day the Honor Guard and Rifle Squad perform a memorial service at each of the cemeteries with a 21 gun salute honoring our fallen and deceased Veterans.

In full Legion dress, the Honor Guard will assemble at each cemetery for this short but impressive service. The Post Chaplain will recite a Veterans prayer, the Rifle Squad will fire 3 volleys of 7 rifles over the graves of the Veterans, and the bugler will play taps. Memorial Day services begin at 9:00 a.m., Monday, May 27, 2013.

Milner Receives Largest Transaction Award

sior-conventionSteve Milner and Denise Weinmann of RVG Milner/Carpenter recently attended the SIOR (Society of Industrial and Office Realtors) convention in Palm Springs, CA.  At this convention, Mr. Milner received an award for the 2012 SIOR Member to Member Transaction Award for the Largest Dollar Volume Transaction (Other) for his 350 acre land sale for $9,650,000.

SIOR is the leading professional commercial and industrial real estate association, with more than 3,000 members in 630 cities in 33 countries.

Recently, RVG’s commercial real estate division joined forces with veteran real estate brokers Steve Milner and Mike Carpenter to form RVG Milner Carpenter. 31st Annual Tractor Raffle

tractorraffleThis Friday, May 10th, 2013 is the 31st Annual Tractor Raffle by the Maple Park American Legion starting at 7pm. Years ago when this raffle started, the Legion always raffled off a riding mower type tractor. Over the years the event has changed so that cash prizes are the big winners but the name Tractor Raffle remains. The Grand Prize Winner does get a toy tractor with his $2500 prize as well.

Tractor Raffle Tickets are now available for $25 per ticket. Each ticket admits one person to the event Friday night at the Maple Park American Legion.There will be free food and beer all night for participants.

Win a $2500 Grand Prize and a Toy Tractor. 36 Winners will win cash prizes! 1st Ticket Drawn wins $100; 100th Ticket Drawn wins $100; 200th Ticket Drawn wins $100; 300th Ticket Drawn wins $100 and 400th Ticket Drawn $2500 and Toy Tractor. Kishwaukee River Watershed – Urban and Rural Planning Workshop

watershedapril1013There will be a Urban and Rural Planning Workshop for the Union Ditch and Virgil Ditch and East Branch of the Kishwaukee River Watershed this Wednesday, April 10th, 2013 from 7pm to 8pm at the DeKalb County Farm Bureau. Farmers, landowners, residents and businesses of DeKalb and Kane County, Burlington, Campton Hills, Cortland, Elgin, Lily Lake, Maple Park, Sycamore and Virgil should all attend!

You need to understand what is watershed planning? How will watershed planning effect you and your business? Come to this meeting and see what they are planning. Provide your input in identifying issues, concerns, goals and priorities for the watershed area at this meeting.

Maple Park Candidates Night

mapleparkhallMaple Park Candidates Night will be held this Wednesday, March 6th starting at 6:30pm in the Board Room of the Maple Park Civic Center. The Village President will lead off and open the forum. From there, each candidate will be asked to introduce themselves. Then, the floor will be opened to resident and reporter questions.

In the 2013 Consolidated Election, incumbent Kathleen Curtis is running unopposed for Village Board President. Running for Trustee for a four year term are (vote for three); Gregory M. Cutsinger, Lucas Goucher, Brian Kinane and Terry E. Borg. Running for Trustee for a two year unexpired term (vote for two) are; Stephan D. Nowak, Debra M. Armstrong and Christopher R. Higgins.

Maple Park American Legion Post 312 Dinner With Santa

mapleparksantaThe Holidays are here and we are all busy getting the house ready for visiting guests, putting up decorations, shopping for that someone special and planning for the new year. With all that, who has time for cooking? Take a break and come on out the Maple Park American Legion this Friday, December 21st from 4:30 to 7:30. Let them do all the cooking and you just enjoy.

It’s their famous “All You Can Eat” Fish and Chicken Dinner with all the trimmings. Enjoy a drink from the bar while you relax and let them do all the work. Cost for the meal is $12 for Adults, Seniors 62+ $10, Children 12- $8, Carry Outs are $12. This dinner is open to the public. Santa Claus will be there passing out treats to the children. Bring the whole family along and don’t forget your camera too!

Maple Park Fun Fest Weekend

Famous Toilet Bowl Races

Maple Park Fun Fest is a classic small town festival geared for big time entertainment. Always occurring over Labor Day Weekend, Fun Fest has provided the perfect way to celebrate summer’s end for over 10 years. Visitors enjoy live entertainment, a huge arts and crafts show, car show, 5K Fun Run, Parade, some of the very best fireworks around, and of course, the famous Toilet Bowl Races – those are just a few of the highlights!

Both children and adults will find plenty to do all weekend long. Whether it’s participating in the Kid’s Bike Parade, visiting the Fire Station for Touch-A-Truck, or just hanging out in the beer garden enjoying delicious food, Fun Fest will provide a glimpse into the charming community of Maple Park.

There will be come high energy softball games, crafters and vendors,  a great food and beer garden and a fun parade. On Stage Saturday is: 1:30 – Destination Unknown, 2:45 – Drift Away, 5:pm –  Hillbilly Rockstarz, 9pm – Hi Infidelity. On Stage Sunday is: 2:30 – PK & the Groove, 5pm – Back Country Roads. Maple Park’s Spectacular Fireworks Show will be at 8:30pm Sunday.

Memorial Day 2012

Come to the DeKalb Memorial Day parade in Downtown DeKalb starting at 9am on Memorial Day Monday, May 28th. Join them on the grounds of Ellwood Museum after the Memorial Day Parade from 10:00am-noon. Celebrate, remember and reflect upon our country and the heroes that made us great. The Mansion will be open free of charge following the Memorial Day Parade and the service.

What’s Going On This Weekend Shorts

Garage Sales
The Village of Maple Park will hold their annual garage sales this Friday and Saturday, May 18th and 19th, from 9am to 4pm.  The Lucerne Lane area in DeKalb (across from the old high school off South 4th St.) will be having garage sales on Saturday May 19th. Multi- family Garage sales in North Grove Crossings neighborhood in Sycamore ( Northeast corner of Peace / Plank Rd & Rt 23)Friday 8-3 and Saturday 8-12.  For even more garage sales, follow the DeKalb-Sycamore Garage Sale group on Facebook.

Jet Warbirds
DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport is hosting  jet warbirds from throughout the northern Midwest this weekend . This event is open to owners and operators of vintage jet aircraft only but it should provide a great show over our area this weekend. See Classic Jet Aircraft Association website for more information.

Sycamore Speedway
Saturday May 19th is Stock Car Racing – All Classes. Looks like great weather for the Speedway this weekend! Great family fun!  Visit the Speedway’s website now!

Open House/Open Barn
This Sunday, May 20th, visit the J.F. Glidden Homestead, 921 West Lincoln Hwy, DeKalb between noon-4:pm. Open House/Open Barn. Architectural preservationist Roger Keys will give tours of the Glidden Homestead brick barn, considered by some historians to be the most historically significant barn in the United States. This is the only day all year when the barn is open to visitors because it is still under restoration. Tours of the Joseph Glidden home and blacksmith demonstrations in the Phineas Vaughan Blacksmith Shop in the old mill house will also be presented. Admission: adults $4; children under 14, free. Yorkville Big Band
On Sunday May 20th join them at the Timber Creek Inn & Suites Convention Center and enjoy dinner, dancing lessons and live music presented by Chicagoland’s premier big band, The Yorkville Big Band. Don’t forget your dancing shoes! Remember to bring your ticket stub to the front desk to receive a guest room at $69.99 on Sunday, May 20th.

Gun Safety for Kids

The phrase “Don’t shoot your eye out!” came from a popular Christmas time movie. The folks in Maple Park are gearing up to make sure that doesn’t happen with an open class titled ‘Gun Safety for Kids’ this Thursday, December 29th from 6pm – 7:30pm.

This class presented by Maple Park Police Officer Andy Rissman. Parents must register their own children; registration ends today, December 27th. . The class will take place in the Maple Park Village Hall board room at 302 Willow St.,  in Maple Park. For more information please call  815-827-3286. All children are welcome to attend.

Last Weekend Before Christmas!

This is the last full weekend before Christmas and DeKalb County has lots of holiday events for the family. We’ve written about several events already. Below is a few more fun things going on in our area.  Make sure you check out our Local Calendar of Events for even more!

This Saturday, how about taking time to go to a FREE Christmas movie classic? The Egyptian Theatre will be playing  ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ at 2:00pm for your enjoyment. Free movie sponsored by Thrivent Financial. The Egyptian Theatre is located at 135 N. 2nd St. in DeKalb.

The Maple Park St. Mary’s Christmas Cookie Sale is this Saturday, December 17th from 9 – 11am. Stop in to the St. Mary’s Novak Center at 123 S. County Line Road in Maple Park to stock up on cookies for the Holidays. Homemade cookies will be sold for $6 per pound. Choose your own assortment. For more information please call 815-827-3302.

All are welcome for a free, traditional Christmas meal and live music at the Evangelical Free Church’s Community Christmas Dinner this Saturday at noon. Transportation is available. Make reservations by December 17th by calling 815-756-8729 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The Evangelical Free Church is located at Bethany Road and First Street in DeKalb.

This Sunday, December 18th, bring the kids to Breakfast with Santa in Cortland from 9 – 11:30 a.m. Santa will pose with children for free photos. Breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, coffee and milk. Breakfast with Santa will be held at the Cortland Lions Hall, 70 S. Llanos St.. Cost is $5 per family.

Peerboom wins 2011 Municipal Rookie of the Year Award

Liz Peerboom has won the  “2011 Municipal Rookie Of The Year Award” in her position as City Clerk for the Village of Maple Park. Maple Park together with the City of DeKalb, submitted an application recognizing her contributions to the review committee this past August. At the October 12th, 2011 award banquet, Liz was acknowledged by her peers for her knowledge and desire to serve in municipal government.

As Maple Park’s Village Clerk, Ms. Peerboom oversees the daily administration of Maple Park’s operations. The Village Clerk is responsible for the preparation and retention of official Village records, including Village Board minutes, ordinances, resolutions, agreements, contracts, leases, bonds, deeds, easements, permits and petitions. The Clerk assists with agenda preparation and distribution for Village Board meetings, and maintains the Maple Park Municipal Code. In addition, the Clerk records various documents with the County Recorder, including annexations, annexation agreements, easements, and plat vacations, and files the budget document and tax levy ordinance with the County Clerk.
