Waterman Summer Rec Opening Day

watermansummerrecSaturday, May 18th is Waterman Summer Rec Opening Day. Opening day activities will start with the annual parade at 10am with festivities to follow at Waterman Lions Community Park. There will be a fundraising raffle with some amazing prizes, games, pictures and concessions. They will have  exhibition games, team pictures, bouncy slide and train rides for tons of fun. On top of cash prizes, they are also raffling a 32″ Insignia TV, a Keurig and over a hundred other items! Come participate in a fun day for all! Help support the teams and join them for the day.

Continue to support the teams by attending a game, weeknights at five fields; at Waterman Grade School, Indian Creek Middle School and Waterman Lions’ Community Park. Waterman Lions Park is located at 420 S. Birch St., in Waterman, IL, 60556.

Sycamore Pumpkin Fest

Sycamore Pumpkin Fest is this week! Tons of fun, all week long, starting with the pumpkin check-in from 4-9pm Wednesday, October 24th and culminating in the most awesome, Sycamore Pumpkin Parade, on Sunday, October 28th. The Grand Opening / Giant Cake Cutting Ceremony (Cake donated by Brown’s County Market) will be on the Courthouse Lawn at 5pm Wednesday.

On Thursday, October 25th the Teen Carnival opens at Sacramento and State Streets from 5pm to 10pm. There will be a $20 unlimited ride special from 5 to 9pm on the adult carnival rides only.  This year the Kiddie Carnival will be open at Somonauk and Elm Streets on Thursday also from 5pm to 11pm. There will also be Slightly Scary Stories for 3 years to Adult at the Sycamore Library at 7pm.

Friday, October 26th, come see the Lions’ Pumpkin Display on the Courthouse Lawn. The United Methodist Church Craft Show (food served), 160 Johnson Ave. will be open Friday and Saturday, noon to 5:30pm. There will be a Heartland Blood drive on South Maple Street from 1pm to 5pm Friday. Scary Stories in the Cemetery program presented by the Sycamore Library staff and friends, at 6 pm Friday in the Elmwood Cemetery.

The Kiddie Carnival will be open at Somonauk and Elm Streets from 5pm to 11pm. The Teen Carnival at Sacramento and State will be open from 5 pm to 11pm as well.

Cortland Festival & Parade Sunday

This Sunday, October 14th is the 31st Annual Cortland Festival and Parade. The parade kicks off at 1pm and will feature members of local bands, scout troops, clubs and other organizations. Participants also receive hot dogs, chips and beverages after the parade. This is graciously donated by the Cortland Lions Club and Festival and Parade Committee.

Cortland’s parade route this year is Loves Rd. (S) to Carol Ave. (E) to Hickory Dr. (S) to Pine St. (E) to Somonauk Rd. (S) to Maple St. (E) to Llanos St. (N) to the Cortland Community Park. Route map link below.

The Parade Committee will be hosting a small festival at Cortland Community Park after the parade. Vendors will offer food for purchase. Fun for all ages. New this year, Cavern Beat, a Beatles Tribute Band will play from 1:30 – 5:30pm.

Judging will be held for the 8th Annual Big Red’s Cortland Apple Cook-Off at 3:30pm in the food tent at Cortland Community Park. Contestants have to create a dish using apples (preferably the Cortland variety) from local groceries or orchards. Someone is going to win big money!

Kishwaukee Fest Parade and Street Dance Friday Night

The Lincoln Highway Parade of Kishwaukee Fest is starting to become a wonderful annual event that everyone should see. Come out and be part of all the excitement during this fantastic evening parade this Friday, June 27th, as it travels down 7th Street and up Lincoln Highway and ends at 2nd Street in Downtown DeKalb. Come early to see the pre parade classic car and motorcycle cruise as they travel up and down Lincoln Highway between 6-7pm, before parking at the end of the parade route (Lincoln Highway and 2nd Street).

Enjoy the sights and sounds of classic cars and motorcycles as they cruise up and down Lincoln Highway before the parade.  This is a fun way to see the classics in action doing what they do best, cruisin’ the strip. Enjoy spending time with your friends and family checking out the unique paint jobs, fancy rims and old school styles before the big parade starting at 7pm.

Cortland Fall Fest Sunday

Come to the Cortland this Sunday, Oct 16th for Cortland Fall Fest. Join them for the parade at 1pm and fun in the park at 1:30pm-5:30pm, including the “mutt strut,” beer garden and live music.  The 30th Annual Cortland Festival and Parade will kick off at 1:00 p.m. and will feature members of local bands, scout troops, clubs and other organizations.  Participants also receive hot dogs, chips and beverage after the parade. This year the theme of the parade is “Harvest”.

Join TAILS Humane Society’s annual Mutt Strut Dogwalk as they kick off the parade.  The Mutt Strut is one of TAILS’ most important fundraisers. The donations you collect will help TAILS continue to be a place of refuge and hope for pets and wildlife After the parade, TAILS will host a Fun Fest complete with canine agility demonstrations, the Sheriff’s K9 Unit, contests, and even a furry fashion show. The Parade Committee will be hosting a small festival at Cortland Community Park after the parade.  Vendors will offer food for purchase. Fun for all ages. Enter a favorite apple dish in the 8th Annual Big Red’s Cortland Apple Cook-Off and win big money!  Apple pies, puddings, cakes, cobblers, or cookies – whatever sweet treat you or your family loves best this time of year is eligible for entry in the cook-off, to be held on Sunday, October 16, 2011, following the parade.

All you have to do is create a dish using apples (preferably Cortland variety) from local groceries or orchards.  Download, complete and mail the entry form  to be eligible for ribbons and prize money.  Participants must drop off their entries between 2 and 3 p.m., Sunday the 16th.  Judging will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the food tent at Cortland Community Park.

Recipes need not be original, but if you know the origin of the dish, include it on the entry form.  Local judges will choose the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.  Judges’ decisions are final.  For more information contact Bob Seyller at 815-758-0649. Kruise Night & Kishwaukee Fest Parade Tonight!

Enjoy the sights and sounds of old time cars in DeKalb tonight starting at about 6pm. This is a fun way to see the classics in action doing what they do best: Crusin’. Enjoy spending time with your friends and family checking out the unique paint jobs, fancy rims and old school styles. It is going to be a revin’ good time in downtown DeKalb tonight.

Then at 7pm, starts one of the greatest American traditions of all time; a hometown parade. This event is part of Kishwaukee Fest and is one of the first parades created to celebrate the uniqueness of DeKalb County. This night time parade gives an opportunity to create a family night out.

The Lincoln Highway Parade celebrates the return of the Drum and Bugle Corps to DeKalb and the wonderful Downtown area. Come out and see all the excitement during this wonderful evening parade. Don’t miss the Street Dances featuring ‘WIRED’ in front of the Egyptian theatre and ‘Skinny Lombard’ in front of Eduardo’s Mexican Restaurant. STROKER RED will be playing at O’Leary’s Restaurant. Enjoy an ice cream and cake social as well as the Street Dance near the Egyptian theatre immediately following the parade. Downtown DeKalb will be rockin’ tonight, don’t miss it!!

Kishwaukee Fest in Full Swing!

Kishwaukee Fest has begun in DeKalb County so make sure you take time to participate in this truly great American tradition.  The week long Festival features Concerts in the Park, a Friday evening Parade, and Saturday Drum & Bugle Corps Show. In addition to the main events there are additional activities, entertainment and attractions to showcase DeKalb County listed below. The Twilight Parade is hosted in DeKalb and kicks off at 7:00pm, Friday, July 29th.  The Drum Corps Competition caps off the week at Huskies Stadium. Kishwaukee Fest began in 2010 as an entertainment salute to DeKalb County, Illinois. See our pictures from the 2010 Kishwaukee Fest below.

The Concerts in the Park features the DeKalb Community Band (Tues.), WIRED Youth Concerts (Wed.), and U.S. Navy Show Band (Thur.). The Friday night (7:pm) Parade is held in downtown DeKalb, and the Drum Corps Festival of Champions show is at NIU Huskie Stadium (7:pm Sat.). Other events include Jazz at the Mansion (Mon.) and Salute to Veterans at DeKalb Airport (Sat.). Visit DeKalb County with special shopping and meal deals, Liners Baseball Games, Classic Car Shows, and Cruise Nights.

One of the greatest American traditions of all time is a hometown parade and this Friday night event is one of the first parades created to celebrate the uniqueness of DeKalb County. Sandwich Freedom Days weekend ahead

Sandwich Freedom Days is an exciting three day festival this Friday-Sunday, July 1st, 2nd and 3rd. There will be great food served all weekend, vendors and crafters, games for the adults and for the little ones, a beer garden and live music. Get a free five minute massage, have fun in giant inflatables, watch a helium balloon launch, enjoy the fireworks and much more.

The weekend kicks off on Friday at 6pm with a downtown beer garden which is new this year, food and the live band, Heartless, the national tribute band of HEART. There will also be a Car Show at Timber Creek Inn & Suites on Friday from 5pm-8pm.

The Sandwich Freedom Days Parade starts the day on Saturday at 10am. From 11am-3pm will be a Kids Bike Rodeo. A Jr. Fire Hose competition will be held at the Firehouse at 11:30am Saturday. The Stone Mill Museum will be open from noon-4pm where one can learn some interesting history of Sandwich. An nationally touring Elvis Tribute Show will begin at 2pm, as will a kids mini tractor pull. Country band Back Country Roads will play at 5pm and classic rock band Phidget will take the stage at 8pm.

Sunday at Sandwich Freedom Days kicks off with a pancake breakfast and the Freedom Run one mile fun run and 5k race check in at 7am. New this year, the traveling Memorial Wall honoring 240 Illinois fallen Heros from Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom will be displayed. At 10am Sunday the Sandwich VFW will honor the wall with a posting of their Color Guard. There will be great food, games, inflatables, vendors and crafters all day Sunday.

From 11am-4pm see some awesome bikes, vendors and listen to music at the Motorcycle Show at the Timber Creek Inn & Suites. Beer Garden in downtown Sandwich opens at noon on Sunday. Dakota, a National act and #1 Frank Sinatra tribute singer who has performed on many T.V. shows plus Brad Pitt & Jennifer Aniston’s wedding will perform at 1pm Sunday.

At 4pm Sunday the downtown fun comes to an end and at 5:30pm the activities resume at the Sandwich Fairgrounds. Watch a vintage baseball game, food, DJ and more. Genoa Days this Wednesday thru Saturday

The 76th Annual Genoa Days starts this Wednesday, June 15th and runs through Saturday, June 18th. Visit Genoa this week for great family fun including carnival rides, parades and live music.

The four-day long festival kicks off Wednesday with a DJ playing downtown from 6-10pm and the annual king and queen contest beginning at 6pm on the main stage.

Thursday’s fun includes The Safehouse Band playing live on stage from 7-10pm. Kids Wristband Night for the carnival rides is also on Thursday.

On Friday, Stroker Red plays classic country music from 6:30 to 9:30pm. There will be Fireworks at Chamberlain Park starting about 10pm, after the close of the carnival for the evening. The rain date for Fireworks is on Saturday, June 18th at the same time if needed.

Brett’s Run/Walk – 5K will begin at 8:30am on Saturday at the Genoa-Kingston High School.  Brett’s Run was created by Lauren, the sister of  Brett Kubasiak, a young boy who was tragically killed in the area in an auto accident in 1997. Brett’s Run Genoa Days 5K raises funds to create and maintain the Brett Kubasiak Scholarship Fund. Graduating members of the Genoa-Kingston School District qualify to receive funds from the account.  A 4H Children’s Pet Show will take place on the stage at 10:30am on Saturday.

The Genoa Days Parade marches through downtown Genoa starting at 1pm on Saturday. Come out and see this unique small town parade with the family. After the parade, from 2pm to 5:30pm, take the kids to the carnival where it’s Kids Wristband Afternoon.

Don’t miss the Fire Department Water Fights at 4:30pm on N. Genoa Street. All Fire Departments are invited to participate. Wrapping up Genoa Days will be the band No Dice, playing 60′s and 70′s Classic Rock on stage from 7pm to 10pm Saturday.

Rides are provided by Skinner Amusements and Bingo is held by the Genoa Lions Club. Bingo will be held nightly starting at 6pm and after the parade on Saturday. Please support Genoa’s local merchants who will be open during normal daytime hours. The festival is sponsored by the Genoa Fire Department and all funds benefit the fire district.

Pumpkin Festival continues

The 2010 Pumpkin Festival starts today, October 27th and runs through Sunday, October 31st. The 2010 Pumpkin Festival Theme is “Pumpkins Across America”. The Pumpkin Check-in takes place today from 4-9pm on the Courthouse lawn. There will be a Giant Cake Cutting Ceremony (cake donated by Brown’s County Market) on the Courthouse lawn at 5pm today. Back in 1956, Wally Thurow, who is known as Sycamores “Mr. Pumpkin”, began what was to become the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival when he displayed a few decorated pumpkins on his front lawn to turn Halloween into a time of fun and creativity. In 1962, through the efforts of Mr. Pumpkin and the Sycamore Lions Club, the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival became an official celebration in Sycamore.

Every year, the Pumpkin Festival unites more than 30 DeKalb County non-profit groups working to provide a weekend of Halloween fun for all. The Courthouse lawn is the center of activities, including thousands of decorated pumpkins on display, there are also art and craft shows, a house walk, a pie eating contest, a carnival, a fun fair, a race and other events. The festival is concluded by a giant parade on Sunday afternoon starting at 1pm. Throughout the festival, good autumn food, snacks and souvenirs are available at stands operated by various not-for-profit DeKalb County organizations.

Cortland Fall Fest & Annual Parade this Sunday

Come to Cortland for their annual Fall Fest this Sunday, October 17th.  The 29th Annual Cortland Festival and Parade will kick off  Sunday the 17th at 1:00 p.m. and will feature members of local bands, scout troops, clubs and other organizations.  Participants also receive hot dogs, chips and a beverage after the parade.  This snack is graciously donated by the Cortland Lions Club and Festival & Parade Committee. Parade beginning staging at 11am at N. Loves Road and W. Cortland Center Road.  The parade steps off at 1pm. rain or shine. The Parade Committee will be hosting a small festival at Cortland Community Park after the parade.  Vendors will offer food for purchase. Beer garden available.  Fun for all ages.

The 2010 Mutt Strut is again kicking off the Cortland Parade. Bring your pet. collect pledges and come march in the parade! This is one of  TAIL’s biggest fundraisers. For more information about Mutt Strutt, please visit www.tailshumanesociety.org.

Homecoming at NIU

It’s Homecoming weekend at NIU this weekend! At 9am on Saturday the day kicks off with the Homecoming Parade. A long-standing Huskie Homecoming tradition, the Homecoming Parade brings Huskies and members of the DeKalb and Sycamore communities together to troop through downtown DeKalb and end in the parking lot of the Chick Evans Field House in a premier showcase of Huskie spirit before the big game. They welcome submissions of floats, dance troupes, motorcycles and even walkers so plan to join in the fun.

The NIU Homecoming Football Game vs. Buffalo kicks off at 2:30 in the Huskie Stadium. Tickets are available for the NIU Homecoming Football Game vs. Buffalo at the DeKalb Chamber for $15.
