‘Annie’ to open this week

annie13“Annie,” a uniquely American story about survival, pluck, second chances, generosity and triumph, opens at the historic Sandwich Opera House this week. This Broadway sensation, ripped from the pages of a comic strip, won three Tony Awards: Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Book.

“Annie” is a spunky orphan with infectious, unbeatable optimism and moxie. She’s determined to find her parents, who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of a New York City orphanage run by the cruel and bitter Miss Hannigan. She does escape, but is caught and returned, only to be selected as the needy child who’d stay at billionaire Daddy Warbucks’ mansion during the holidays. Shenanigans ensue, relationships grow, and even President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Secret Service join the fray.

“Annie” will be performed for a limited 5 performance engagement on the Opera House stage March 21-24. Thursday-Saturday performances begin at 7:00 p.m., with a Saturday and Sunday matinee at 2:00 p.m. The theater, a known landmark in DeKalb County, is located at 140 East Railroad Street in Sandwich.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Tickets may be purchased online at www.wewantpr.com or by calling 888-395-0797 .

“Annie” is based on the Tribune Media Service Comic Strip, “Little Orphan Annie,” with book by Thomas Meehan, music by Charles Strouse, and lyrics by Martin Charnin.

“This show takes place in an era that many of our grandparents lived through as children,” said Kris Pagoria, director of the production. “And the stark contrast between the classes still makes the Depression era one of America’s most intriguing historical periods.”

Sandwich Mayoral Race

The City of Sandwich has an interesting and at times contentious mayoral race taking place this election between long time Mayor Tom (Tommy) Thomas and ex-Sandwich Police Chief Rick Olson.

sandwich-mayoral-race

L to R: Tom Thomas, Rick Olson

Current Sandwich Mayor Tom Thomas’ campaign slogan is ‘Steady and Proven Leadership in Uncertain Times’. Incumbent Tom Thomas, age 66, has served as the Sandwich Mayor for the past 24 years. Thomas points to the financial management he has shown during the past 4 years where, unlike many towns around them, there have been no city lay off’s during this terrible economy.  Follow Tom Thomas on Facebook.

Former 16 year Sandwich Police Chief, Rick Olson, 60, is also a candidate for the Mayor of Sandwich. Olson cites his desire to promote a spirit of cooperation between city government and the community’s businesses and organizations as one of his primary platform issues. Prior to moving to Sandwich, Olson was a graduate of the FBI National Academy, served 20 years on the Rochelle police force and worked his way up from a patrolman to a lieutenant.

Olson’s commitment to Sandwich has included serving on the 911 Board, Church Council Member for Our Saviors Lutheran Church of Sandwich, long time volunteer for the Franklin Mall Project, founding member of the D.A.R.E program in Sandwich and assisted many organizations with their fundraising efforts including Sandwich Education Foundation, Fox Valley Older Adult Services, Open Door, Sandwich Area Chamber of Commerce, Individual Advocacy Group, Sandwich Band Association, Freedom Days and Relay For Life among others. For more information about Rick Olson and his mayoral run, call 815-970-0573, visit www.rickolsonformayor.com or “Like” him on Facebook.

Theatre of Illusion at the Sandwich Opera House

thespencersThe Spencers: Theatre of Illusion show will be at the Sandwich Opera House this Saturday, February 23rd, 2013 at 8pm. Kevin and Cindy Spencer present a high-tech stage show with special effects, cutting-edge illusions and knee-slapping comedy. Theatre of Illusion is not your run-of-the-mill magic show and the Spencers are not your typical magicians. By blending the theatrical elements of a Broadway-style production with the high energy of a rock concert, these artists take their audience on a journey to the brink of impossibility…  and back again.

Audience members don’t simply watch the show, but are also invited to participate in the magic. Using magic much like a storyteller uses words, Kevin fuses this family-friendly production with a gamut of emotions. The Spencers have been described as “Modern Day Houdinis” by the critics. Kevin and Cindy Spencer were named 2009 MAGICIANS OF THE YEAR by the International Magicians Society. The duo presents a big, high-tech stage show that combines drama, comedy, romance and suspense with elaborate stage illusions.

Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 – 65 & over and $15 for students. Call the box office to reserve your seat today at 815-786-2555. The Sandwich Opera House is located at 140 E Railroad St  in Sandwich, IL 60548.
