Winter Farmers Market Saturday

uuwinterfarmersmkt3The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb is once again hosting a Winter Farmers’ Market with arts and crafts at their church located at 158 North Fourth Street Saturday February 9th 9:30 am to 3pm. This market will be great opportunity to support local farmers and artisans while buying healthy foods and craft items.

The market will include grass fed beef, free range chickens & eggs from the Hasselmann Farm just over the northern DeKalb county border. There will be locally produced honey, elderberry cordial and elderberry. There will be several artists and crafters, including home spun yarn from DeKalb. Fresh baked French pastries and other goods will be available as well. Among the great craft choices too numerous to mention are handmade jewelry, knitted items, birdhouses, sun-catchers, goat soap, homespun yarn, weaving tools, wood-carving, and many other handmade items. There will be over thirty vendors, some joining the market for the first time. There will also be a used book sale with a wide variety of books to choose from.
In addition to the great shopping opportunities there will also be live music all day and hot food all combining to create a festive and fun atmosphere. We will also have many new musicians playing at the market for the first time.

“The market has become a very popular community event that supports our local farmers and artists. We had nearly 400 attend our December market.” said Dan Kenney the market organizers. “It is part of our goal of building a more sustainable community. Research shows that of every $100 spent at locally owned businesses $68 stays in the community, as opposed to only $43 staying in the community when purchases are made at non-locally owned businesses.” “ We hope people who have not been here before give it a try.” Added Kenney.

A small admission fee of one dollar will be collected at the door. If you would like more information call Dan Kenney 815-793-0950.

They would like to welcome you, your friends, and your family to join us at the Church, located at 158 N 4th St DeKalb Illinois 60115. Breakfast will be provided on a free-will donation basis.

The Welcome Café is a new nonprofit endeavor dedicated to providing food with dignity. This prepared breakfast is full of heart, warmth and sincerity. The cold winter days are slowly approaching so come into the warmth of the church and enjoy a delectable breakfast made by the Welcome Café and Community Kitchen volunteers. There will also be live music provided by local musicians.

Welcome Café and Community Kitchen offers more than just a morning meal; a helping hand for the unemployed and under-employed will also be available. This month’s seminar offers the community a chance to work with the Illinois Work Net Center. Saturday’s seminar will provide information on filling out job applications, general equivalency degree, English as a second language, and coursework available at Kishwaukee College. Computers will also be available for job searches and resume work.

This will be the second breakfast provided by the Welcome Café.  The Welcome Café is also working toward establishing a community incubator kitchen. The community kitchen would provide area residents, food growers, and entrepreneurs a licensed commercial kitchen incubator in DeKalb where they can process and package their crops and value added products while receiving business supportive services.

“There is a real need for a community commercial kitchen in DeKalb County,” said Terri Mann-Lamb, a local caterer and an adjunct in the NIU Nutrition Department, “ for many small start-up businesses who would benefit from such a kitchen, such as caterers, personal chefs, bakers, cake decorators and producers of specialty food items such as salsa and candies.”

This community event is a joint effort with students from Northern Illinois University who will provide a helping hand. Organizations such as: the NIU Chapter of Bread for the World, Alpha Phi Omega, and the Student Health Organization are all coming together to contribute to the meal and day.

Breakfast is linked to many health benefits and improved performances. The breakfast provided by Welcome Café & Community Kitchen will give you energy and warmth during this holiday season. Everyone is welcome. For more information contact Dan Kenney 815-793-0950.
