A candidate forum apparently designed to be uneventful was just that. The DeKalb Chamber and the Egyptian Theatre combined for a professional and nice presentation of local candidates appearing on the November 6 ballot. The format of the forum did not have questions for the candidates. Each candidate in a contest race received three minutes for opening remarks and two minutes for closing remarks. Uncontested candidates or the only candidate to show up in a contested race was given five minutes for presentation.
There were no Mitt Romneys in the participating local candidates although Richard Schmack was critical of Clay Campbell in his opening and closing remarks.
Bill Brady and Ron Matekaitis each spent part of their time allotments telling the audience what a nice guy the other guy was. And they are nice guys. And they’re both good judges and one of them will not get a voter approved promotion in November.
Marc Johnson, running for County District 8, said that through his canvassing he’s learned that many residents of his district are really upset with the landfill expansion decision and the lack of transparency the board and administration used in the process. That’s probably why Julia Fauci, seeking re-election to District 9, neglected to mention her vote to approve the megadump as part of her accomplishments in her long tenure on the board. She announced that she and fellow landfill expansion supporter Paul Stoddard were running as a team on the ballot.
I wonder what would happen if Samuel-Louis Bandy, Jr., the lone alternative to the Fauci-Stoddard team, took first place as vote getter in the Nov. 6 election and Stoddard and Fauci each tied for second? But I digress.
Anyone left undecided in the DeKalb County State’s Attorney race is probably still undecided. That debate needs to be a single race event with no other candidates. Campbell needs to respond directly to Schmack’s criticisms and allegations. The low hanging fruit for the election politics of the position is the prosecution of violent crime, drug trafficking and gangs, etc. Campbell has sworn testimony in depositions and public hearing transcripts prior to the landfill expansion approval. Schmack has published statements he attributes to Campbell that were made as DeKalb County State’s Attorney in legal proceedings in the case of Stop the Megadump vs the DeKalb County Board.
The undecided don’t know which Clay Campbell to vote for or against. Schmack has the qualifications should he win this race but it is Campbell’s to lose.

Additional Notes: From my observations during the meet and greet session John Rey is the presumptive candidate of the unofficial but influential DeKalb County Democrats for Mayor of DeKalb. Unofficially of course.
Tom Demmer said he’s been to 20-some parades and many events such as the candidate forum in his bid to become State Rep (90th District). Where’s Thomas Boken, Jr.?
Stephen Reid was at the Meet and Greet session but did not participate on the stage because of a schedule conflict. He left to attend DeKalb County Board Finance meeting. Reid was on the other end of the hottest debate of the evening, with moi. I won the debate, hands down. Why?
Because this is my blog.
