KC offers Kids College through the summer

kish-kidscollegeThe Kishwaukee College Continuing Education department is offering five Kids College Academies – including a new Kishwaukee Area Space Academy (KASA) – this summer. In the Academies, elementary and middle school aged kids can spend a week learning and having fun exploring a particular subject area. There are also academic preparation academies for elementary and middle school kids and high school youth. Academy participants may choose to attend all week or select specific days and topics. It is more cost-effective to register for the full-week Academy. A new summer program added to Kids College this year is a Quilhot One Room Schoolhouse Camp.

The Quilhot One Room Schoolhouse Camp will be June 30 – July 3 from 9:00a.m. – noon. Students will experience life in a one room schoolhouse and spend the morning enjoying old-time crafts and activities such as butter churning, root beer brewing, weaving, soap felting, calligraphy and more! This camp is for students entering grades 4, 5, 6, and 7. The Quilhot School house is located at 102 S. Indian Road in Shabbona.

The Kish-U-Pick Art/Science/Technology Academy will be held on June 23 – 27 and is for students entering grades 4, 5, and 6. Students choose from a variety of short courses that are offered in morning (8:45a.m. – 10:45a.m.), mid-day (11:30a.m. – 1:30p.m.) and afternoon (1:45 – 3:45) sessions to create a week of activities that is uniquely their own. Participants can select a few courses or an all-day schedule for the entire week. Course offerings include: Blow It Up! (rockets and science), Green Screen (video), Clay Creations, Be A Rock Star (music video), What’s Inside? (electronics), Outdoor Cooking, Masquerade Masterpieces (mask making), Crime Scene Investigation, Take A Bow (theater), Digital Photography, Out of This World (space/astronomy) and We’re Rockin’ (geology)

Kishwaukee College’s Continuing Education department is offering a series of Kids College Academies this summer, beginning with the Kish-U-Pick Art/Science/Technology Academy on June 23 – 27. Other Academies offered this summer include: Cooking Academy (July 7 – 10), Art Academy (July 14 – 17), Kishwaukee Area Space Academy (July 21 – 24), and Learning Skills Academies (July 28 – 31 and also August 4 – 7). There is also a Quilhot One Room Schoolhouse Camp (June 30 – July 3). The Cooking Academy will be held on July 7 – 10 from 10:00a.m. – 2:00p.m. and is for students entering grades 4, 5, 6, and 7. Each day will focus on one culinary topic, skill and activity. The four topics are: Breakfast Bonanza, Tutti-Frutti Fruit, Scrumptious Snacks, and Chocolate Mania.

The Art Academy will be held on July 14 – 17 and is for students entering grades 4, 5, 6, and 7. The Art Academy meets from 9:30a.m. – 2:30p.m. Each day will focus on one art skill and activity. The four activities are: Watercolor with Chalk, Mixed Media, Clay Creations, and Monster Mash.

New this year: Kishwaukee Area Space Academy (KASA) on July 21 – 24 from 9:00a.m. – noon for students entering grades 4, 5, 6, and 7. NASA Ambassador and teacher Michelle Szybowicz created KASA and will share her knowledge and excitement of outer space with students as she guides them through a variety of activities to develop a better understanding of space and space travel. Students will learn about flight by making kites, paper airplanes, fizzy flyers and a Goddard foam rocket. Other activities include Lost on the Moon, Space Jingo and Cosmic Cuisine.

The Learning Skills Academy classes will be offered over a two-week period. Classes designated for Middle School students are for students entering grades 6 – 8 and classes designated for High School are for students entering grades 9 – 12. The week of July 28 – 31, two classes will be offered: Study Skills – High School will meet from 9 – 10:30a.m. and Jump Start High School Algebra will meet at 10:30a.m. – noon. Both of the July Learning Skills Academy classes will meet at Genoa-Kingston High School.

During the week of August 4 – 7, the following Learning Academy classes will meet at Kishwaukee College: Study Skills – Middle School from 10 – 11:30a.m. and Jump Start Middle School Math from noon – 1:30p.m.; Jump Start High School Algebra from 10:30a.m. –11:30a.m. and Study Skills – High School from noon – 1:30p.m.
