Boy Scout Collecting Items for Military Care Packages for Eagle Project

dustinslider1Dustin Slider, a Life Scout with BSA Troop 16 chartered at Federated Church in Sycamore and a Sycamore High School Sophomore, is currently working on his Eagle project. Dustin is collecting various items to include in military care packages to be sent to our soldiers in Afghanistan. “I chose this for my Eagle project because I have always been fascinated and respectful of our military service people. Often the military only receive care packages around the holidays, and I wanted to send numerous care packages at a different time so our service men and women know we are supporting and thinking of them all throughout the year” comments Dustin.

Collection boxes have been distributed throughout the community and are located at Sycamore High School, Sycamore VFW, Advanced Family Eye Care, Four Seasons Bowling Alley, and at 2239 Luther Lowell Lane in Sycamore. Suggested donated items include gently used or new books, magazines, crossword/Sudoku/puzzle books, DVDs, and video games. Other items to donate include para-cord survival bracelets (can be made at Michael’s Craft Store), soccer/football/baseballs, frisbees, playing cards, small dice and card games, iTunes gift cards, earbuds, bandanas, beef jerky, trail mix, coffee mix (K-cups), and powdered drink mixes. Please do not donate perishable items or chocolate, knives or weapons. Monetary donations are also being collected to cover the shipping costs and to purchase any additional needed items that were not donated.

The community is encouraged to help with this project. Dustin is currently accepting contributions through September 30. Donation boxes will be out in the community through the end of September. Items may be dropped in any of the boxes at the mentioned locations in Sycamore. Monetary donations may be mailed to 2239 Luther Lowell Lane, Sycamore, IL 60178. Dustin comments, “My goal is to send 100 boxes to a unit in Afghanistan this fall.”

Anyone interested in donating items, making a monetary contribution, volunteering your time on this project, or needing more information may contact Dustin Slider via E-mail at or call 847.971.8990. “Thank you for your support of our military overseas” comments Dustin!
