On 11/17/14, at approximately 9:45 pm, a person reported to the NIU Police Department that he was robbed while walking in the 1200 block of Varsity Blvd. DeKalb Police Department was contacted about the report and both departments responded to search for any suspects and/or evidence. The subject reported that his assailants were armed with a handgun during the robbery and Northern Illinois University subsequently issued a warning to their students about the potential danger. The investigation has continued since that date with officers reviewing evidence and speaking to witnesses. Investigators determined that the robbery report was false. The subject stated that he was actually involved in a drug transaction in a different city when his property was taken. He made the false report to the DeKalb Police Department to account for his missing property. As a result, on 12/3/14 a warrant has been issued for the arrest of Brian Thomas. He has been charged with Disorderly Conduct for making a false police report. This crime is a Class 4 felony.

On 11/21/14, at approximately 3:00 am, a subject reported that he was robbed while walking in the 600 block of N Annie Glidden Rd. The subject initially reported the crime to student workers in a dormitory on NIU’s campus, who in turn called the police. Officers from the DeKalb Police Department and the NIU Police Department responded to the area to investigate this incident. Investigators reviewed evidence in the case and spoke to witnesses before determining that the subject fabricated the robbery report. The subject stated that he had accidently injured himself and created the robbery story when asked about the injury. As a result, Joshua Goddard was charged with Disorderly Conduct for making a false police report. He turned himself into the police on 12/2/14. This crime is a Class A misdemeanor.
