DON’T ROCK THE BOAT!

The sun is out, the sky is clear and the boat is packed up and ready to launch. Here are some safety tips for boat owners.

BUCKLE UP

Just like on the road, buckling up while on the water saves lives. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, simply wearing a life jacket could have save the lives of more than 80 percent of boating fatality victims.

HAVE THE RIGHT EMERGENCY EQUIPTMENT

Be prepared for an emergency by keeping a fire extinguisher, first aid kit, whistle and marine VHS radio on board. Depending on the size of your boat, these items may be required by the U.S. Coast Guard.

WATCH THE WEATHER

The sun may be out now, but is there a storm brewing to the west? Before launching, check your local weather conditions and bring a radio to keep track of any changes. Bad weather approaching? Get off the water and have fun on shore.

BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS

Nice weather brings out water enthusiasts. Always boat at safe speeds, especially in crowded areas. Keep an eye out for larger vessels that may be slow to stop or turn and adhere to buoys and other navigational aids that have been placed to ensure your safety.
