‘America’s Gift to the World: Jazz and Dance’ on Tuesday

Just Make It Happen presents “America’s Gift to the World: Jazz and Dance,” on Tuesday, May 16, featuring John Smith, KSO trombonist, and the Shananigans at DeKalb’s St. Mary’s Catholic School, 210 Gurler Road, at 8:15 am and 9:15 am. Principal Feldmann invites public to enjoy programs. Visitors should check in 20 minutes prior to program. Free parking is available near the main entrance. The facility is fully accessible.

Debussy’s classical hit Clair de Lune will feature Reilly Farrell, St. Mary’s 7th grade student, on piano, followed by Harry James’ jazz band waltz version. Ken and Dorothy Stroud, swing dancers from Beloit, Wisc., will create couple’s moves to compositions connecting dance and jazz to big bands.

A Salute to Armed Forces will provide students and guests an opportunity to remember our veterans. Nancy Killeen, vocalist, will lead the children in American folksong A Tisket A Tasket followed by the Ella Fitzgerald hit. Denny Vaupel will join Nancy on the Latin hit Change Partners.
Few students have access to professional music that features the American Song Book and melodies that resonate to all ages. Thanks to a grant from Farny R. Wurlitzer Foundation, JMIH will conclude the on-site 2016-2017 Artist in Residence series at St. Mary School, DeKalb.

JMIH believes that music’s unique learning and enjoyment gift should be available to all ages. Thus far, six select DeKalb County pre-schools have hosted 12 Artist in Residence music education opportunities featuring brass and strings sounds.
