How far will a young wife and mother go to find an adventure? In 1891, a twenty-four-year-old girl, Georgia Townsend Yates packed up her daughter and left her affluent life in farming town of Sycamore, Illinois, to journey half-way around the world. She had known her sea-captain husband for just two years, and her only knowledge of seafaring came from literature.
Over fifteen months she traveled to Japan and Singapore. Georgia wrote many letters home describing her travels and daily life on the ship. Clint Cargile will be sharing this story that is part of his new book, “In Search of a Fair Wind: The Sea-letters of Georgia Townsend Yates 1891-1892” as part of the Thursday, May 4th Brown Bag lunch talk at the Sycamore History Museum, 1730 N. Main Street in Sycamore. The Brown Bag lunch goes from noon – 1pm and is free, but donations to the museum are always welcome.
