YMCA’s Ultimate Team Challenge this Saturday!

There is still time to get your group registered for the YMCA’s Ultimate Team Challenge coming up this Saturday! This is an opportunity to unite the community corporations, non-profits, families, and friends in a healthy, competitive way. They invite groups to participate in team events (Beach Ball Volleyball, Canoe Tug of War, Obstacle Course, Boogie Board Race and Costume Contest). Your group will be scored on how well your team does in each event and totals will be calculated after the last event. Teams consist of 4 or 5 individuals. All team members must participate in 3 of the 4 events.

The event will occur from 12:00pm – 4:00pm on Saturday, February 3, 2017 at the Kishwaukee Family YMCA, 2500 W. Bethany Rd. in DeKalb.

Deadline for early bird registration is January 17, 2018. A $25 fee will be added to those who register after January 17. Registrations will be accepted until February 1, 2018.

The event is presented by the DeKalb, Sycamore and Genoa Chambers of Commerce, and sponsored by First Midwest Bank and Northern Rehab Physical Therapy Specialists.

Challenge Events:
BEACH BALL VOLLEYBALL:
4 team members will participate.
Teams will be randomly placed in a bracket tournament.
Teams will be guaranteed at least two games.
Basic Volleyball rules will apply with some modifications.
Games will be limited to 5 minutes.
Team ahead on points after 5 minutes is declared the winner.
If tied, the next point wins.
Spiking is not allowed. Spiking the ball will lead to forfeiture of the point.
A legal hit is contact with the ball by a player at the waist level and above.
3 hits per side maximum.
The ball may be played off the net during a volley and a serve.
Switching positions is allowed only after a serve.
Teams officiate their own games.
1 point is earned on every score of the ball.

CANOE TUG OF WAR:
3 team members will participate.
All participants must wear a lifejacket. Lifejackets will be provided.
All participants must stay in the canoe. If anyone leaves the canoe, their team will automatically forfeit the match.
Teams can only propel their canoe by paddling.
Canoes and paddles will be provided.
Teams will be randomly placed in a bracket tournament.
Teams will be guaranteed at least two matches.
Canoes will be attached by a rope.
A team wins by paddling their boat the end of the pool while dragging another boat to the middle of the pool.
Matches will be limited to 5 minutes. If no team has won after 5 minutes, the team closest to the wall will be declared the winner.
Participants ages 16 and younger, must have passed the Y’s swim test prior to the event date.

OBSTACLE COURSE:
4 team members will participate.
Each team member will complete one lap.
Each participant must complete each obstacle.
Failure to complete any obstacle successfully will lead to a disqualification.
Each team will have the option to run the obstacle course twice.
Placing will be determined by each team’s best final time.

BOOGIE BOARD RACE:
Multiple teams race against the clock! Half of each team will go to the opposite end of the pool. At the whistle the first person of each team puts on an oversized t-shirt (over their bathing suit of course) The swimmer then kneels or lays on the board, and paddles to the other side of the pool. The swimmer will then switch shirts and places with the next swimmer in line who will then race back to the other end of the pool. This continues until all 4 swimmers have completed 1 length of the pool. The winner will be the team with the fastest time.

4 team members will participate.
Each team member will complete one length of the pool (25 yards).
Each team member must remain on top of the boogie board for the entire 25 yards. If anyone falls off, they need to go back to the start and complete the length legally.
Participants can only use their arms and legs to propel themselves. Participants using lane lines or the bottom of the pool to propel themselves forward will need to restart the length or will be disqualified.

After completing their length, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd participant will take off a t-shirt and pass it to the next participant. The next participant must have the t-shirt on prior to starting their length. Having one arm in each arm hole, and the head through the head hole in the t-shirt qualifies as having the t-shirt on.

  • Boogie boards and t-shirts will be provided.
  • Each team will have the option to swim the relay race twice.
  • Placing will be determined by each team’s best final time.
  • Participants ages 16 and younger, must have passed the Y’s swim test prior to the event date.

BEST TEAM COSTUME:
Points will be awarded for the best team costume / theme.
Costumes must be appropriate for a family environment.
Each team will have one ballot, ranking the other teams 1st – 3rd.
Placing will be determined solely on the ballots submitted by each team.

Note – Event organizers reserve the right to modify the games / rules, if necessary.

Corporate Team: $150
Non-Corporate Team: $150
Youth Team (under 18): $100

1st Place – 10 points
2nd Place – 8 points
3rd Place – 6 points
4th Place – 5 points
5th Place – 4 points
6th Place – 3 points
7th Place – 2 points
8th Place – 1 point

T-shirt Sizes Available: YS, YM, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL (Must register by January 17 to guarantee a t-shirt)
