The DeKalb County Health Department will be hosting a household hazardous waste collection this Saturday, May 19, 2018. The collection allows citizens the opportunity to safely dispose of unused or leftover household products commonly found in homes, basements, and garages.
The one-day collection is scheduled to take place from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the DeKalb County Farm Bureau located at 1350 W. Prairie Drive in Sycamore. Items will be collected by Heritage Environmental Services, an IEPA licensed contractor. Volunteers will be on site to assist with traffic flow. The vendor will help to remove items from vehicles. Residents are encouraged to remain in their vehicles to help traffic move faster.
“Residents are encouraged to bring oil-based paints, paint thinners, chemical cleaners, mercury and mercury-containing items, antifreeze, motor oil, gasoline, kerosene, weed killers, insecticides, pesticides, adhesives, hobby chemicals, and similar products,” said Michelle Gibson, Solid Waste Specialist of the DeKalb County Health Department. “Fluorescent and other high-intensity discharge lamps may also be brought to the event” said Gibson.
Items not accepted include propane tanks, pharmaceuticals, explosives, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, biohazard waste, sharps, agricultural chemicals and all business wastes.
