On September 1, 2018, Lakeshore Recycling Systems (LRS) becomes DeKalb’s exclusive waste hauler for refuse (garbage), recyclables, and yard waste.  As the City and LRS prepare for this transition, the City would like to provide a brief overview of important, upcoming dates and information provided in the following Press Release.

Monday, August 27, 2018. LRS will begin to deliver garbage and recycling carts to
residents. Carts will arrive before your regular pickup day that week. Residents may
briefly hold both LRS and Waste Management (WM) carts as the exchange may
overlap. LRS will not remove WM carts.

Wednesday, August 29, 2018. WM will begin to pick up their carts on August 29, 30,
and 31 to coincide with WM’s final pick-up days. Residents must leave carts out after
WM’s final collection. A third-party will collect the carts shortly thereafter. Carts not
collected on their scheduled pick-up day will be collected the next day. If a resident’s
cart is not picked up, they must contact WM customer service at 800-796-9696 to
schedule a pick-up.

Friday, August 31, 2018. The citywide yard waste containers at the locations listed
below will no longer be available.
— Fire Station #2 – 1154 S. 7th Street
— City Garden Plots, west of Fire Station #3 – 950 W. Dresser Road
— The southeast corner of North 7th and Oak Streets

Unlimited curbside collection of yard waste is included with LRS services. Yard waste
must be placed in biodegradable bags or a 32-gallon can marked with “X” or “YW”.
Brush may be bundled in four-foot lengths, not to exceed 50 pounds. Larger carts may
be leased through LRS for an additional cost. Residents requiring additional yard
waste disposal services have the option to drop off yard waste at the DeKalb County
Landfill located at 18370 Somonauk Road, DeKalb, IL between the hours of 8:00 a.m.
and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Contact the DeKalb County Landfill at 815-
758-6906 for more information.

September 6, 7, and 8, 2018. LRS will begin their first scheduled pickups. Pickup
for that week is delayed by one day due to the Labor Day holiday on Monday.
However, the following week, LRS will return to the regularly scheduled pickup days
of Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Special Requests. Senior citizens and residents of multi-family homes with one-car
garages may request 35-gallon gallon carts in place of the standard issued 95-gallon
garbage and recycling carts. Please note that it is the experience of LRS that most
households find the 35-gallon cart to be too small as they only hold three kitchen-size
garbage bags.

Senior citizens or residents of multi-family homes requesting the 35-gallon carts may
contact LRS directly at LRS Customer Service 815-770-7550 or by email at
dekalb@lrsrecycles.com. Senior residents may also contact Patrick DiDiana at (815) 748-8135 or by email at patrick.didiana@cityofdekalb.com to submit requests or
report issues.

Special requests for the smaller carts may not arrive with the initial delivery of carts as
the smaller carts are special order. However, LRS plans to have all special requests
accommodated by October 17, 2018. Requests made prior to August should arrive
before September 1. Requests made between August 18 and September 1 will arrive
between September 10 and September 29.

Last, all households should have received a mailer from LRS detailing the services
provided in the new contract, acceptable materials, and other relevant information. If you
did not receive this mailer, or inadvertently discarded it, copies are available at City Hall.
LRS has also created a comprehensive website specific to DeKalb refuse services.
Residents are encouraged to use that website as a resource now and in the future. The
City’s website will also be updated in the coming days to reflect changes to City refuse
services. Those websites can be found at the following links:
