It’s Family Day at the NIU Football game today and that seems to be the theme around the area with a plethora of events geared to entertain the little ones. Here is a rundown of family-friendly events going on in the area throughout the day.

BLOCK Fest at Ellwood House Museum, 11:00 a.m. – Noon

Presented with the NIU Center for P-20 Engagement

Explore the possibilities of block building in this fun event for children ages 8 months to 8 years. This hands-on program promotes early math and science skills using several types of non-interlocking blocks.

Kishwaukee College 50th Anniversary Homecoming Celebration, 11:00 a.m – 3:00 p.m.

Celebrate an old-fashioned, family-friendly Homecoming on campus with kids’ games, activities sponsored by Kish departments/programs and more. Men’s Soccer will play Carl Sandburg College – wear your Kish gear to cheer the Kougars to victory!

Family Fun Fest at St. Mary School, DeKalb

Activities for the kids: (Bounce houses, face-painting, balloons, temporary tattoos, games, prizes)

Lunch for Purchase – Bake Sale – Car Wash

Come have fun with your school family! And bring other friends and family too!

Kids Can Cook! at Sycamore United Methodist Church, 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Let dinner be on the kids tonight! Join us for of food, games, fun and family!

Kids age Pre-K through High School will be showcasing their culinary talents to raise funds for FSA’s Youth Mentoring program (formally known as Big Brothers Big Sisters). Taste food in the categories of Appetizer, Entree, Side Dish or Dessert.

On Sat., Sept. 15th from 5-7pm, sumptuous foods will be enjoyed along with fun fair style games (that’s right parents, just like the ones you grew up playing!!) at Sycamore United Methodist Church.

There is a $10 registration fee for all chefs that includes a customized apron. Event Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for children 12-3, 2 and under are free, and $40 for a family of four. Raising money for FSA’s Youth Mentoring!

Children’s Community Theatre Penguin Project Presents Mary Poppins Jr., DeKalb High School, 7:00 p.m.

One of the most popular Disney movies of all time is capturing hearts in a whole new way: as a practically perfect musical! Mary Poppins is an enchanting mixture of irresistible story, unforgettable songs, breathtaking dance numbers and astonishing stagecraft.

The Children’s Community Theatre Penguin Project provides children and young adults with disabilities the opportunity to step into the spotlight.

ApplePalooza in Downtown Sycamore, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Join over 10 Merchants of Downtown Sycamore in celebrating the coming of fall with a special emphasis on apples. Each business will be offering something special on Sep 15 during their regular business hours. this event is free and for the entire family.

Stargazing at Afton Forest Preserve, 6:45 p.m.

Join the Northwest Suburban Astronomers (NSA) at Afton Forest Preserve for an evening observing stars and planets. Dress for evening and bring a flashlight covered with red plastic or cellophane (red light preserves your night vision), and insect repellent, if needed. Please arrive by 6:45 p.m. (sunset is at 6:59 p.m. ) or come early and picnic or hike the trails. You are welcome to bring your own telescope or binoculars. In the event of inclement weather the event will be canceled. There is no cost to attend and no registration is required.
