National Drink Wine Day – February 18

While February 18 is observed annually as National Drink Wine Day, it would be a shame to celebrate only one day a year. Perhaps this day is just a reminder to drink wine with a friend all year long.

Wine does have its benefits after all. Moderate drinkers of wine have lower risks of liver disease, type II diabetes, certain kinds of cancers, heart attack and stroke. It also can reduce the bad cholesterol (LDL) and increase the good (HDL).

A glass of wine before bed can relax you and help with weight loss. The alcoholic content in red wine tends to lower the body temperature and according to studies, it also speeds up the release of certain hormones and triggers metabolic changes that help you drift off to sleep. New research also shows that red wine, especially Cabernet Sauvignon, Chianti, and Merlot, contains melatonin. Melatonin regulates the body clock, which also aides in sleep. Melatonin is also an anti-oxidant, which means it has anti-aging and cancer preventative properties, too.

Moderate wine drinkers tend to have less stress in their lives. Studies have found there is an association between moderate alcohol intake and lower levels of depression, anxiety and perceived stress.

The health benefits of drinking wine come from moderate consumption, defined by the American Heart Association as one-to-two four-ounce glasses a day. Be sure to drink in moderation so as not to turn these benefits into dangers.

Wine goes great with a variety of fine food. Since February 18th is also National Crab-Stuffed Flounder Day, we can suggest a fresh, fruity white wine pairing the celebrations together! Stop by Ellwood Steak & Fish House in DeKalb (IL) for one of their signature small plate seafood options and ask the server to suggest a good wine pairing.

You can also visit a winery or attend a wine tasting. There are over 35 wineries and tasting rooms in the Northern Illinois region. DeKalb County and the surrounding area has several great wineries, including Prairie State Winery in Genoa, Waterman Winery and Acquaviva Winery in Maple Park.

Always drink responsibly. It’s best to share with a friend and be willing to try a new wine. What you wear also dictates what wines to order. Never order red wine when wearing a white blouse. And regardless of what others say, drinking wine will not make you a better singer or dancer.
