It seems as if there is an increasing desire to hold Ward meetings and that is a very good idea. Three such meetings that have come to my attention: One is from an appointed Council member, one from a current Council member, and one from a soon-to-be Council member.
Here are the details:
- Ward 3 Ald. Joyce Stupegia will hold a meeting on Saturday, March 9th, 12-2 p.m. at City Hall, 200 S. Fourth St.
- Ward 5 Candidate Scott McAdams will hold a meeting on Saturday, March 23rd, 2-4 p.m. at Rosita’s, 642 E.Lincoln Hwy.
- Ward 6 Ald. Mike Verbic will hold a meeting on Monday, April 1, 6- 8 p.m. at the DeKalb Police Department, 700 W. Lincoln Hwy.
- In addition, soon-to-be Ward 1 Alderman, Carolyn Morris, will be hosting meetings at Fanatico’s, 1215 Blackhawk Road, on Tuesday, March 12, 7-8 p.m. and Wednesday, March 13, 12-1 p.m. Ward 1 residents and others are invited to attend to share concerns about the Ward and the City.
It is encouraging to see that an appointee who will serve for a short time is setting such a good example and holding a Ward meeting. Hopefully, the two people who are running in this Ward will follow her lead if elected. Also, the Candidate in Ward 5 is to be commended for changing what was originally going to be a meet and greet to a Ward meeting since it appears he will be the new Alderman in that Ward. Of course, Ald. Mike Verbic is to be commended for having held Ward meetings on a continual basis, encouraging citizen participation and seeking input on issues.
It is not easy to hold office and not always easy to hold extra meetings. This is why it is important for people to pay attention to what is happening locally and to support the decision makers by being involved and by engaging in the voting process.
