Area artists, photographers, authors and crafters are invited to display and sell their works at a first-time event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, August 10th, 2014 at the Joseph F. Glidden Homestead and Historical Center, 921 W. Lincoln Highway. “Arts at the Barn” is part of the Glidden Homestead’s Year of the Barn programming.
Artists should provide their own tables, chairs and equipment to display and sell their artwork on the lawn of the homestead. The cost to participate is $20, and the deadline to register for this inaugural event is June 15th.
On the National Register of Historic Places, the home and barn of Joseph F. Glidden are preserved to tell the story of the invention of barbed wire. Glidden received the patent for “The Winner” barbed wire on Nov. 24, 1874. The site also includes a recreated blacksmith shop similar to the one where Glidden’s collaborator, Phineas Vaughan worked farther east on Lincoln Highway.
The homestead and welcome center are open for from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays, and from noon to 4 p.m. the second and fourth Sundays of the month through October. Special programming is presented on several Sundays throughout the season starting with Puppets at the Barn on June 8th.
For more information about the homestead, and to register for Arts at the Barn, call the welcome center at 815-756-7904 or visit www.gliddenhomestead.org.
