The first day back from ‘Winter Break’ in many local area schools has been pushed back at least one day. DeKalb County is under a Wind Chill Warning that’s expected to be the worst in nearly 20 years. We will experience a prolonged period of dangerously cold wind chills lower than 30 below, Sunday night through Tuesday morning. Wind chills of 40 to 50 below are expected late Sunday into Monday afternoon and again early Tuesday morning. These temperatures will result in frost bite and lead to hypothermia or death if precautions are not taken. Bring and keep pets indoors.
Illinois State Police advise to travel only if an emergency and absolutely necessary. Motorist who choose to travel and become stranded are not only putting their lives in danger, they are putting additional strain on police and EMS resources.
