DeKalb, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University football team (and all other MAC schools) will play a 2020 football season beginning in November, the MAC Office announced last Friday following a meeting of the MAC Council of Presidents.
Each MAC team will play a six-game season beginning November 4, 2020 and concluding with a MAC Championship game on December 18 or 19. Teams can begin preseason practices on October 5. The complete schedule for all 12 teams will be announced at a later date.
The move came about after numerous Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) leagues were able to successfully start their 2020 seasons while instituting new testing procedures, with more conferences announcing starting dates over the last week.
NIU and the MAC Conference was the first Major Sports Division universities to cancel Fall Football, and the last conference to return to playing.
With games starting on weekdays from November 4 through mid-December, attendance will be limited due to the weather conditions. Also, MAC schools have not released information about the number of people that will be allowed in the stands, as each state has different mandates on attending events and activities.
