Dave Smith, coordinator of KishHealth System’s Joint and Spine Centers, was a presenter and guest speaker at the Marshall Steele’s 7th Annual Orthopedic and Spine Summit in San Antonio Texas in September. At the conference, Smith discussed the care of joint replacement patients at the KishHealth System Joint Center. He focused on the excellent outcomes achieved at the center, with 93 percent of joint replacement patients discharged directly home in just two days without the need for an inpatient rehabilitation stay at a nursing home.
Since its start in January 2011, the Joint Center boasts an over 90 percent patient overall satisfaction rate. Smith emphasized the work of the joint replacement team, with clinical and nonclinical staff members, that has been developed to care for patients before, during, and after surgery. It has been well documented that patients’ length of stay in the hospital after total joint replacement surgery can be reduced with enhanced recovery programs, which are practiced at KishHealth System. The joint replacement program at KishHealth System cares for patients using a step-by-step process from pre-op education to surgery and post-operative care, which are hallmarks of programs based on evidence-based best practices.
